COMING SOON

RISE (Research and Innovation Supporting Evidenced-based practice) clinic will be coming soon at the end of 2025. Self-referral access will open in early 2026.

Our vision

A future where everyone affected by mood disorders feels understood, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Our mission

To bring people and research together to improve understanding, care, and support for mood disorders.

Who are RISE?

We are a Devon Partnership NHS Trust (DPT) research focused clinic who are funded by the Mental Health Translational Research Collaborative Mission (MH-TRC), formerly the Mental Health Mission.

We are commissioned to work with people who are living with mood disorders, which includes hard to treat depression and treatment resistant depression.

We are a team of research practitioners and led by a doctor (consultant psychiatrist). We are part of a wider research team within the organisation and we also work closely with our colleagues at the University of Exeter who have a psychology focused clinic called AccEPT.

Who can access the clinic and what do we offer?

Currently not open for self-referrals (access will open early 2026)

RISE is for people who are living with depression but haven't found NHS Talking Therapies helpful or haven't been able to get the right kind of support. They also don't qualify for specialist mental health services, and most have only ever had help from their GP.

Our clinic offers an initial assessment with our research practitioner, to see together if our clinic is right for you. We may then offer a full assessment with our doctor, where a review of medication or treatment can be discussed. Your care will remain under your GP but we can offer recommendations for medication changes or alternative treatment.

Whilst we are able to offer this opportunity to be assessed by our doctor we are a clinic set up to look at increasing research activity and supporting people to get involved.

Whether you are seen by our doctor or not we want to encourage more people to consent to us storing their contact details so we can get in touch with you and offer information about new and exciting research opportunities.

How and when we see people?

We are non-emergency service. If you need an urgent response, we would advise using the urgent help page which can guide you to appropriate service or links for immediate or urgent help.

We can offer a range of options regarding how we see someone, this includes:

  • Face to face assessment at our base Wonford House, Exeter
  • Telephone Consultation
  • Virtual Meeting (online)

If you opt for a face-face meeting there is parking onsite at Wonford House in Exeter.

What happens after I’ve been referred to the RISE Clinic?

The clinic will contact you to check whether it is an appropriate place for you to be seen, you will receive an appointment for a pre-assessment with one of our research practitioners. This gives us an opportunity to learn more about you, your history and any other relevant factors (this will include questions about substance use/ family history/ safety and mental health related diagnosis). This pre-assessment will last up to two hours and may include completing various questionnaires about any symptoms and possibly physical health tests, ideally we would like these to be completed prior to the appointment.

Potential treatment recommendations and/or research opportunities will be discussed with you. If you are then eligible for a full assessment with our doctor you will be contacted.

At your full assessment our doctor will then be able to make recommendations for changes to prescribing or treatment plans and work closely with your GP in order for those recommendations to be actions. A letter detailing the outcome and recommendations will be sent to your GP and also inform them of any research studies you have consented to take part in.

The clinic generally provides one off assessments with advice to the GP and does not provide ongoing care. However, if the person is taking part in a study, or receiving treatment, that requires them to be in specialist mental health care and they are currently only being seen by their GP, they will remain temporarily under the care of the RISE clinic.
