Carers Week (9-15 June) is an annual campaign that aims to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid cares face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the country.

This year the theme is 'caring about equality', highlighting the inequalities faced by unpaid carers, including greater risk of poverty, social isolation, and poor mental and physical health.

Joanna Duke, Together and Carer Lead, said: As a Carer Lead, I see every day how strong and dedicated carers are. But I also see how caring for someone can be exhausting - emotionally, physically, and financially.

If we truly care about fairness and equality, we need to make sure carers are listened to, supported, and included in the decisions that affect them.

This Carers Week, let's show that we value carers - not just by saying it, but by taking real action. Let's listen to what carers need, speak up for better support, and work together to remove the challenges they face.

As an organisation, we recognise and understand that carers play a vital and invaluable role in supporting those with mental health, learning disability and neurodiversity needs. The Carers' Steering Group, which is co-chaired with a carer, is in place to monitor the progression of our three-year carer's strategy. It works closely with teams across the Trust to embed best practice, including the Triangle of Care framework. As part of our ongoing commitment to the Triangle of Care, twelve of our community teams have recently achieved the 2-star accreditation. This milestone reflects our dedication to improving the experience of carers and recognising their essential role in supporting individuals with mental health and neurodivergent needs.

Our TALKWORKS and Together teams will also be busy throughout the week, raising awareness of how their services can help carers, both online and at in-person events. They will be at Torbay Hospital on Monday 9 June, and will be attending Devon Carer's Carer Friendly Conference at Westbank on Tuesday 10 June. More information about the support that TALKWORKS can offer, available both to colleagues and patients, is on the TALKWORKS website.
