Piloting the role of Registered Nurse Associate within the Central Safeguarding Team

Our Safeguarding Team is setting a national precedent by becoming the first in the country to integrate a Registered Nurse Associate (RNA) role into a Central Safeguarding Team. This innovative step demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest level of care and protection for our patients.

The RNA will support and work with other clinicians within the team to review RMS reports and to gather information from clinical records to support the team's engagement with other agencies such as children's social care. This role will enhance the team's capacity to support our clinical teams and collaborate with other agencies, creating a robust network of care.

This initiative highlights DPT's dedication to innovation and excellence in patient safeguarding. By integrating the RNA role, we are not only expanding the team's skill set but also providing a new career pathway for healthcare professionals.

Amy Skinner, RNA in the Central Safeguarding Team, said: "I am excited and proud to be able to pilot this new role, not just for DPT, but for the entire country. I hope it will help more teams to consider the Registered Nurse Associate role in creative ways, enabling more career opportunities. I am grateful to Penny and the team for welcoming me and having the vision to explore this new role. I have been with DPT in various roles for five years now, and I look forward to reconnecting with colleagues and making new connections across our incredible services."

Penny Rogers, Deputy Director of Safeguarding and Public Protection, said: "Safeguarding our patients should be core business for all our staff, regardless of role or qualification. The addition of an RNA into the Central Safeguarding Team is providing a different lens and voice to assist us in thinking about how clinicians across the Trust recognise safeguarding concerns and how we can deliver safeguarding supervision in a meaningful way for all our clinical staff."
