New animations provide support for people with memory problems

To mark World Alzheimer's Day (21 September), our Devon Memory Service and Learning Disability Team have produced two animations that highlight the support available for people experiencing memory difficulties and explain what to expect during a memory assessment.

Memory problems can arise for many reasons. While ageing is a common factor, other causes may include stress or the early stages of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease.

The Devon Memory Service helps identify the cause of memory difficulties and provide tailored information, support, and treatment to help people live well and independently. The Learning Disability Team also provides dementia assessments and treatment.

  • Devon Memory Service Animation : Outlines the aim of the service, the types of support available, what to expect during your initial appointment and the next steps.

  •   Memory Assessment Animation : A simple step-by-step guide designed to help people with a Learning Disability and their carers understand the memory assessment and diagnostic process.

Magnus Cormack, Clinical Psychology Lead for Learning Disability (LD) and Neurodiversity Services, said: "The LD service and Devon Memory Service really valued the opportunity to work together to create visual communication tools that support clients with cognitive vulnerabilities who need to access memory and dementia assessments.

"We'd like to thank Kay Stratford, General Manager in the Senior Operations Team, for linking us up with an animation studio and keeping everything on track. We'd also like to thank the Devon Integrated Care Board (ICB) and the Mental Health Learning Disability and Neurodiversity (MHLDN) Provider Collaborative, for providing the funding and making this all possible.

"With government figures suggesting that dementia prevalence is projected to rise by 40% by 2040, everything we can do to make people's journey more comfortable is to be celebrated."
