Jo recently completed the Saltash Half Marathon in memory of her friend and colleague, Kelly, who is tragically no longer with us after a long battle with her mental health. This challenging race, known as one of the oldest and toughest half marathons in the country, was not only a personal achievement but also a heartfelt fundraising effort for Open Up's Little Something Fund. This fund supports women and families in their recovery from perinatal mental health difficulties.

Kelly became a mother to her son Josh nearly four years ago and, like many new mothers, faced the overwhelming impact of postnatal depression. During this time, she received care and support at Jasmine Lodge, our specialist Mother and Baby Unit. Before her passing, Kelly had expressed a desire to give back to Jasmine Lodge through fundraising.

Reflecting on the race, Jo said: The half was amazing - I loved it. The weather was perfect, not too hot but dry. It was much hillier than I anticipated, nearly 400 metres of elevation. Most of it was in the second half, which was a bit mean! But my family came to support me with an epic sign and my kids had drawn messages on the road in chalk. That gave me and many others a real boost.

Coincidentally, the race took place on Jo's final day as a 41-year-old and she was assigned bib number 41! That felt pretty special, she noted. Despite the tough course she finished in an impressive 1 hour 58 minutes and 15 seconds, placing 54th overall, 7th woman overall and first in her age group.

Proud of the achievement and believing Kelly would have been too, Jo added: I'm just glad I've been able to do something that might help someone else. The main thing I want people to know is that you are loved more than you will ever realise and we're all needed more than we know. If you're struggling, please ask for help. It's always there.

Funds raised by the run will go towards Open Up's Little Something Fund, which supports additional care and recovery projects not covered by the NHS. These small but significant extras, such as creative therapies, comfort items and community-based support, make a real difference to families during some of their most challenging times.

If you'd like to support the fundraiser, you can still donate via Jo's JustGiving page.
