What inspired you to become a nurse, and what keeps you going today? What drew you to work in paediatrics?

I always wanted to work with children and I was also inspired by my Mother who was a Macmillan community nurse for adults. I trained as a children’s nurse in one of the first direct entry children’s qualification programmes for project 2000. I have remained passionate about caring for sick children and ensuring that families have high quality access to skilled children’s nurses to enable expert clinical care, compassionate emotional support, and strong advocacy.

Can you tell us about a moment in your nursing career that made you feel especially proud?

I was especially proud to obtain a Queen’s nurse title in 2019. It was very gratifying to read the feedback that colleagues and patients completed for my application and to be successfully chosen to become a Queens nurse and have my achievements recognised. I am incredibly inspired by networking with other Queens nurses and hearing some of their stories and work projects.

What do you value most about being a nurse, or about working within the nursing profession?

I believe that care and support are at the heart of nursing, caring is demonstrated by showing compassion and kindness towards others both patients and colleagues.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a nurse?

Community Children’s Nursing is the most rewarding job as you get the opportunity to build unique relationships with the child/ family and have the privilege of providing nursing support at often the most challenging and emotional of times in their lives which can make a real difference to families. It is also very humbling to get to know family’s strength and resilience which is often incredible.

Would you recommend your job and Devon Partnership Trust to others?

I am extremely passionate about Community Children’s Nursing and think it is a fantastic job, no day is the same, there are opportunities to so a wide range of clinical skills or specialise in an area of interest. It is wonderful to be part of an organisation that promotes high quality community nursing and to work with like-minded nurses who are equally driven.
