Gayle Githens-Mazer appointed to coveted NIHR Senior Research Leader Programme

Gayle Githens-Mazer

Gayle Githens-Mazer, Clinical Lead for Research Delivery, has been selected for the National Institute for Health and Care Research's (NIHR) Senior Research Leader Programme. This prestigious three-year programme will enable Gayle to support nurses and allied health professionals (AHPs) to develop their research leadership skills and improve the research culture within our organisation and beyond.

As part of the programme, which began in April 2025, Gayle has set three top priorities:

  • Co-create a comprehensive research strategy in collaboration with our nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals (NMAHPs). This will involve mapping accessible and inclusive pathways for mental health NMAHPs to engage in research.
  • Identify, develop and support Research Champions among our nursing staff who are eager to lead and enhance our research culture. Establishing mentorship programmes will connect experienced researchers with those new to research, fostering collaboration and engagement.
  • Extend the research strategy into primary care by working with stakeholders in general practice, primary care networks (PCNs), and the School for Primary Care Research to bridge gaps between primary and secondary care.

Gayle said: "I'm delighted to have been selected for this programme. It gives me dedicated time to turn my ideas into reality and make a real difference for our nursing staff and AHPs.

"It's also great to be joining a national community of research colleagues. I recently went to a face-to-face event in Leeds with the other 25 members of this year's cohort and it was so exciting to connect with people who share my passion for research. We shared ideas, and as we're part of cohort three, we're able to see what others have done before us. Everyone has a 'can-do' attitude and has overcome obstacles, which is really inspiring to see."

Gayle joined DPT over two years ago and has 26 years of NHS experience, working across Trusts in London and the South West Peninsula. She has also worked for the NIHR as a Research Delivery Manager.

With more than 18 years' experience in research, Gayle is passionate about delivering the latest treatments and innovations to service users. She provides operational leadership to the Research and Development Team, supporting the set-up and delivery of studies and trials that enhance care for service users and their families. She also works closely with clinical services to promote the sharing of knowledge and experience, and collaborates with university, academic, and commercial partners.
