Four steps to safety

Using the four steps to safety programme, staff at Devon Partnership NHS Trust aim to reduce violence by 50% within our inpatient psychiatric wards by the end of August 2017.

This will be achieved by workingw ith staff to implement the four steps to safety programme across all of our inpatient wards. This work is being delivered in partnership with people with lived experience of inpatient services.

Four steps to safety aims to support staff to deliver the best evidence based care to improve patient engagement and rduce violence on inpatient awards. 

The four steps to safety are:

• Step 1 - Proactive care
  Supporting staff to recognise and manage risk of violence quickly before incidents happen.
• Step 2 - Patient engagement
  Promoting a closer working relationship between staff and patients.
• Step 3 - Teamwork
  Everyone working together to deliver great care.
• Step 4 - Environment
  Understanding where we work and how we can change things to reduce the risk of violence.
