What are panic attacks or panic disorder?

A panic attack is an experience of sudden and intense anxiety.  Panic disorder is where you have recurring and regular panic attacks, often for no apparent reason.   The number of panic attacks you experience vary from person to person.

The exact cause of panic disorder isn’t fully understood but it’s thought to be a combination of physical and psychological factors. 

You’re not alone

At least one-in-ten people will experience occasional panic attacks, which are usually triggered by a stressful event.  Panic disorder affects about two in 100 people, and it’s roughly twice as common in women as it is in men.

How are you feeling?

Some of the common symptoms of panic attacks include:

  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Palpitations
  • Thinking you might die
  • Dizziness
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling confused
  • Hyperventilation (over breathing)

Panic disorder is treatable, but to make a full recovery it’s important that you seek help as soon as possible. Treatment for panic disorder is much more effective if it’s given at an early stage.
