World Patient Safety Day 2024

Posted by Devon Partnership Trust on 17th September, 2024

World Patient Safety Day 2024Today is the World Health Organisation's (WHO) annual World Patient Safety Day.

World Patient Safety Day presents an opportunity for organisations to pause and focus on the crucial role that patient safety plays across all NHS organisations.

This year’s theme is:

‘Improving diagnosis for patient safety’

The theme aligns with many of the priority areas within the NHS Patient Safety Strategy, including work to introduce Martha’s Rule, which aims to improve the recognition and response to deterioration.

Get it right, make it safe!

The global campaign objectives are to:

  • Raise global awareness of errors in diagnosis contributing to patient harm and emphasise the pivotal role of correct, timely and safe diagnosis in improving patient safety.
  • Give prominence to diagnostic safety in patient safety policy and clinical practice at all levels of health care, aligned with the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030.
  • Foster collaboration among policymakers, health care leaders, health workers, patient organisations, and other stakeholders in advancing correct, timely and safe diagnosis.
  • Empower patients and families to actively engage with health workers and health care leaders to improve diagnostic processes
