Workways, part of Devon Partnership NHS Trust, is delighted to have been successful in obtaining funding from NHS England to expand the IPS, Individual Placement & Support approach to people who access mental health services across all areas of Devon. Until now only people living in Exeter, East & Mid Devon have been able to benefit from IPS support to find and maintain employment.
The Centre of Mental Health in London recognised Workways as a Centre of Excellence six years ago in delivering IPS services. Funding from NHS England has now enabled the expansion of this successful service across Devon with the aim of doubling the employment rate for people who experience enduring mental health conditions.
Lynn Aggett, Team Lead from Workways stated: "We have found the IPS approach to be extremely successful in supporting and enabling adults who are in contact with our Community Mental Health teams to obtain paid employment. Workways has consistently delivered above national average outcomes and is identified as an exemplar service."
The service expansion will deliver nine new Employment Specialist posts across Devon with staff covering the Torbay, Totnes, Tavistock, Teignbridge, Newton Abbot and North Devon areas.
Having paid employment is an important recovery goal and we have seen many examples of how this can be life-changing for people who have been challenged by an experience of mental illness. Alongside a sense of independence, being employed can provide a gateway back into society and the social norms that can be lost to people struggling with mental health difficulties.
Regaining employment can make a real difference for people on their journey to recovery.
