The Veterans’ Lead at Devon Partnership NHS Trust has received a prestigious NHS Leadership Award for his work with former service men and women and their families. John Pattison lifted the award for Outstanding Collaborative Leadership at a ceremony in Bristol last week. It recognised the work that John has done in developing an innovative approach to supporting people with mental health needs and supporting their families and loved ones. As a regional award winner, John will now go forward to the national awards in 2015. John has worked for the past two years, initially in East Devon, to develop peer support networks with veterans and their families. The model of support has been well received by many veterans, who may previously have found it difficult to get the help and assistance they needed, and the service is now being spread to other parts of Devon. It has also received interest from many other parts of the country and John has talked about it in Westminster. John’s work has included close working with former service men and women to set-up a social enterprise called Veteran’s Peer Support. This is already proving to be very successful and Lin and Graham Wheelan, two of the founders of Veteran’s Peer Support, were with John when he received the award.
