A Consultant Psychiatrist with Devon Partnership NHS Trust has been elected Chair of the Faculty of Liaison Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr Peter Aitken, who is also the Trust’s Director of Research and Development and an honorary Associate Professor with University of Exeter Medical School, has been elected to serve as Chair for a period of four years from July 2013. Commenting on his appointment, Dr Aitken said: “Liaison psychiatry is all about providing specialist mental health care and support to people who are in general hospitals – usually with some form of physical complaint.  It is a part of psychiatry that is quickly gathering momentum and recognition, and we now have liaison psychiatry teams working with all of Devon’s acute general hospitals.  We know from the evidence, and the feedback that we get from patients and other healthcare professionals, that it is a model of care that works and it is a great honour to be elected as the Faculty’s Chair.”

No Health without Mental Health: is a campaign by the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges to strengthen both the provision of mental health care to people with physical illness, and the quality of physical healthcare provided to people with mental health problems.  More at:
