In February 2024 in partnership with St John Ambulance, we commenced our first cohort of NHS Cadets. As an NHS Cadet, young people learn about life in healthcare from inspiring professional speakers. They develop key skills, boost their self-confidence, and get to explore careers in the healthcare sector through volunteering experiences.
With the support of colleagues, we have been able to deliver several face-to-face and virtual speakers, providing valuable insight into roles in Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, and Neurodiversity. We are truly grateful for the time and commitment of all our speakers.
Theresa O’Neill, Business Manager, South, West and Torbay, said: “I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to you for inviting me along to meet the NHS Cadets at St. John’s Ambulance HQ yesterday to share my experience and knowledge around interviews as a candidate and recruiting manager in the NHS.
"It was an absolute privilege to meet such an engaged, attentive group of prospective future NHS colleagues. Within a few moments, it was clear I was in the presence of great future doctors, paramedics, dieticians, anaesthetists and it filled me with confidence that should I ever need to call on them in that role, I would be in good hands. Every single one of them gave outstanding accounts of themselves in the brief time I met them and should be rightly very proud of their skills and qualities. I would be glad to have any one of them in my teams."
Caroline Lee, Project Lead, St John Ambulance, said: “Thanks to our colleagues at DPT, we really appreciate all the invaluable advice and guidance you gave our Cadets. We learned that a patient is not a condition, they are a person and the information you gave us about communication, compassion and empathy will serve our cadets well in their future careers.”
Sally-Ann Turner, Head of Resourcing had the pleasure of presenting the cadets with a certificate of completion.
