Seventy-six years ago, on 5 July 1948, a monumental step was taken to revolutionise healthcare in England. The National Health Service (NHS) was born, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare to not just individuals who could afford it, but for all. Today, as a proud NHS organisation, we join the nation in celebrating the NHS's 76th anniverary, honouring the tireless efforts and dedication of healthcare professionals and volunteers who have made a significant impact on the lives of millions of people.
The creation of the NHS was the result of years of hard work and the vision of various figures who recognised the inadequacy of the existing healthcare system. Since then, the NHS has achieved significant medical advancements, including pioneering the world’s first liver, heart and lung transplant in 1987. It has introduced ground-breaking treatments, such as bionic eyes and, in more recently, the world’s first rapid whole genome sequencing service for seriously ill babies and children.
The NHS has surpassed expectations in many ways, yet there is always more that can be done. Once considered an unimaginable concept, a National Health Service has become an indispensable part of our lives today. Treating over a million people a day in England alone, the NHS touches the lives of every one of us. It has become an integral part of our society, providing essential healthcare services and embodying the values of compassion, dedication, and excellence.
Across the NHS in England there are more than 350 different careers available. If you would like to be part of the 'NHS Family' search NHS Careers or visit www.healthcareers.nhs.uk to find the role for you. We also have a wealth of information about careers with us on our recruitment website.
On Sunday 7 July we also join the Together Coalition to mark Thank You Day, a day to celebrate and give thanks to those that go above and beyond for us.
