A film for and by children who have a parent with a mental health problem

Our Perinatal team have been working with ForMed Films and three young people from Devon - Anya, Macauley and Erin - to create an inspiring animation in which the three stars describe in their own words what life is like for them having a parent with significant mental health problems.

Dr Jo Black, named Doctor for Safeguarding, explains: "The film was originally designed to help mental health staff who work with adults to keep in mind the children in their families. It has enormous appeal, charm and honesty and I recommend it to those who work with, care for or manage services for children. It will be used for staff training and staff are invited to share the animation with families to help other children feel less alone." The film has really important positive messages for children with a parent with a mental health issue:

  • You are not alone
  • This is not your fault
  • Things won't always be bad
  • Do not give up hope
  • Where to find help.
