National Apprenticeship Week 2025 logoIt's been another great year for our ‘Growing Our Own’ apprenticeship programme, providing development opportunities and career pathways for existing employees while also attracting fresh talent to the organisation.

Reflecting on our apprenticeship journey, we have come a long way since September 2017, when we launched our first apprenticeship for a small group of staff to complete the two-year Assistant Practitioner qualification. Our first cohort of four Registered Nurse Apprentices followed in October 2018.

Fast forward to 2025, and we now have 195 apprentices undertaking over 30 different apprenticeships across both clinical and non-clinical areas within DPT.

Celebrating our apprentices' achievements

It is fantastic to offer these opportunities, and the results speak for themselves. So far, we have trained:

  • 37 Registered Nurses – a mix of Mental Health and Learning Disability Nurses
  • 44 Registered Nursing Associates
  • 19 Clinical Associates in Psychology
  • 15 Assistant Practitioners
  • eight Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners
  • two Social Workers

Our first cohort of Occupational Therapy Apprentices is due to qualify later this year, and we were delighted to welcome our first Physiotherapist Apprentice in January 2025.

Paul Blackmore, Apprenticeship Lead, reflected on the teams dedication: "The Apprenticeship Team is incredibly proud of our apprentices, who commit up to four years of study while working full-time to gain their qualifications. We provide both academic and pastoral support, particularly for those returning to education after a long break, as we understand how daunting that can be."
