International Nurses Day is celebrated on Sunday 12 May, to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale. The annual event honours the invaluable contributions of nurses to the healthcare sector worldwide.
The theme this year is 'The economic power of care', which was chosen as a continuation of the 2023 ‘our nurses, our future’ theme, to highlight the need for nursing to be seen as an investment, instead of a cost, and to “reshape” perceptions of nursing’s economic and societal benefits.
Every day our incredible nursing staff show us the definition behind dedication, caring and compassionate. We are so proud of our colleagues and would like to say a huge thank you for continuously going above and beyond.
A message from Chris Burford, Chief Nursing Officer and Allied Professions Lead: "Thank you to all our Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and Support Workers. It's important that we recognise all of the great work that we have to offer in terms of our mental health and learning disability services.
"Nursing is more important than it's been for some time, coming out of COVID I think we can really see the strength and the skill that all of us can offer. I have been a nurse for over 40 years and I continue to love every aspect of it."

We asked colleagues what it means to them to be a nurse. Their responses will be shared on social media on International Nurses Day and uploaded to YouTube.
Follow the day on social media by using the hashtag #IND2024 to see how others are celebrating the occasion.
To also mark International Nurses Day on Sunday 12 May, Chief Nursing Officer for England Dame Ruth May and parkrun UK are encouraging nurses across England to take part in parkrun events this May.
