In Devon there are a number of services to help support people who are experiencing mental health distress or a crisis including crisis cafes.
Crisis cafés generally provide out-of-hours support for people struggling with their mental health, in a non-clinical setting with a safe, calm and structured environment, where individuals can go to access support.
Mind (2010) defines crisis as: ‘A mental health crisis means that a person is in a mental or emotional state where they need urgent help and has been described as an overwhelming experience; something that is more than the person can deal with.'
We are asking for your help with a review we are undertaking in relation to crisis cafés, by encouraging you to share your feedback, experience and views in a short survey.
There are two surveys. The first is aimed at people who might use the cafes and the second is aimed at those who might refer someone to access a crisis cafe.
Other models for Crisis Cafés exist throughout the country, and these may vary in terms of hours, locations, access and services offered. We want to review these other models alongside seeking your views on our current services, to ensure we can develop the best model to meet the needs of people living in Devon.
There are currently four crisis cafés operating across Devon to support people with their mental health situated in Exeter, Torquay, Barnstaple and Plymouth.
These cafes offer a mix of one-to one support through coming to the café, and/or via phone calls. Some of the cafes offer drop-in type arrangements, others offer appointments.
Thank you for supporting us with this piece of work. Please note, all of your answers will be treated as confidential.
