National funding announced last week will enable a state-of-the-art mental health research facility to be built in Exeter. Devon Partnership NHS Trust was successful in its bid for £1.47m to create a modern facility dedicated to the study of mental health and dementia.
Once established, it will be one of the few centres in the country with such impressive facilities. This will open the door to different types of research being possible. The plan, for instance, includes an en suite bedroom which makes the study of sleep disorders possible. The facility will also include spaces for individual therapy, group therapy and the physical health care of those who live with mental illness.
The funding is from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Speaking after the award, Tobit Emmens, Associate Director of Research and Development, said: “This really is fantastic news for people in Devon and for mental health research. Mental health research facilities have often lagged behind those available for people with physical illness, and we have been working to address this.
“We know patients who are treated in research active NHS organisations have better health outcomes and this new facility will ensure we can expand the number of mental health and dementia research studies we can deliver. It will also enable us to tackle health inequalities people in Devon face, including increasing opportunities for those who don’t usually take part in research.”
