Enhancing out of hours services in South and West Devon

Posted on 1st April, 2005

A nine-month pilot scheme is being launched from 4th April 2005 that will see an enhancement to the out of hours mental health services provided in South Devon. Nurse Practitioners from the Torbay Crisis Resolution Service based at the Haytor Unit in Torbay will be responsible for providing the service from 9.00pm-8.00am seven days a week. One Registered Nurse will be available each night shift to provide the following: · Mental health assessments in Torbay A&E

· A link to the local community, that will include receiving calls from NHS Direct, Devon Docs, EDS Torbay, Devon County Council and Torbay Council.

· Advice and assistance to known service users who may need support in a crisis. As Chris Burford, Locality Operational Manager comments: “This is an exciting development for our Crisis Resolution Service being able to offer 24 hour access to the service. I know that, for example, Devon Docs fully support the scheme and are looking forward to having a closer link to our service and the ability for us to do emergency assessments in people’s homes if necessary. We will be formerly monitoring and auditing the pilot scheme with a view to rolling out further across the Trust.“
