Dr Peter Aitken has been appointed as our Director of Medical Education. Peter will add this new responsibility to the role of Director of Research and Development and his clinical work with liaison psychiatry and the Individual Patient Placement programme, for which he is currently Clinical Director.

Commenting on the appointment, Peter said: “I’m excited by this opportunity. We have a strong base in learning and teaching and great university partners, so I see my role as leading the organisation and quality improvement of what we do in Devon Partnership Trust, and bringing Board support to the effort.

“We are running programmes for school leavers, undergraduates, foundation doctors, psychiatrists in core training, speciality and academic training and our specialty doctors and consultants. These can be strengthened, developed and made more accessible and I would like to see a much greater use made of our expertise by colleagues in general practice and hospital medicine - as part of our drive toward integrating mental and physical health care.

“More than anything I would like to inspire the next generations of school leavers to choose a career in mental, health based on the experience we offer here at DPT. I would also like to make sure that we listen to the voices of people with lived experience in relation to how we teach students about mental health.

"I would value any thoughts or ideas from colleagues and will keep people posted as to our progress.”
