This week is Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
Eating disorders affect 1 in 50 people but with commonly held myths associated with eating disorders, many people may not be recognising the signs and thus not accessing the help they need.
Eating disorders are serious illnesses which do not discriminate. Of those diagnosed with an eating disorder, 25% are male (BEAT), 94% are healthy weight or overweight and members of the LGBTQIA+ community are at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder than heterosexual individuals (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders).
This year’s campaign video from BEAT targets the misperceptions about eating disorders, highlighting that eating disorders can affect anyone.
